First-Ever China VR College Tour!

Along with admission officers from Northwestern, Vanderbilt and WashU, we are proud to announce the China VR College Tour, a first-of-its kind opportunity for students and parents to interact in-person with admission officers from top universities while also experiencing their college campuses through VR (“virtual reality”) video.

Each of the universities has produced a VR video about their university, with Mandarin narration. We will be providing VR headsets so students and their parents can personally experience the virtual reality videos.

With a kickoff in the US Embassy on September 1st, we will be visiting high schools in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu, Shanghai, Wuxi and Hangzhou. The presentations are free and open to the public, but due to space constraints, participants must first register online. You can learn more about the VR tour and register online at https://initialview.com/vr-tour.

Partnership with Bridge2Rwanda

We are excited to announce that for the next admission cycle we will be
interviewing all Bridge to Rwanda Scholars as part of our partnership with them. We are excited to support the tremendous talent that is in this unique and extremely impactful program and to serve as a platform that will increase their visibility within US admissions. If you are not familiar with B2R, we hope you’ll take some time to get to know them and consider supporting them.

The InitialView Fellow!

We’re excited to announce this year’s InitialView Fellow: Christie Ruggieri from the admissions team at Drexel University. As the Fellow, Christie will be with us on the ground in Beijing during the admission cycle, traveling and interviewing with our core team. In addition to her experience in international admissions, Christie has been completing a graduate degree with an emphasis on international admissions, and she is particularly familiar with Vietnam (which we want to understand better!). We are excited about everything we are going to learn from her this upcoming year.

Please join us in congratulating her, and you’ll see her soon in interviews!

The 2017 - 2018 InitialView Fellowship

(If you are not able to watch the above video on Youtube, please try YOUKU)

We are pleased to announce the second annual InitialView Fellowship, a nine-month opportunity in Beijing for one/two US- or Canada-based admission officers.

InitialView Fellows live and work with us in Beijing during the admission cycle, conducting interviews, traveling throughout China and potentially to other countries, and learning all one can about international students and their high schools.

The Fellowship is the only opportunity of its kind for a mid-level admission officer, and is another way that we demonstrate our unequalled commitment to transparency.

Applicants do not need to have Chinese language ability—the primary requirement is a devotion to admissions and one’s prospect for future advancement within the admission world.

Please watch our current fellow talk about her experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrq8Kn52GBo (if you are not able to watch on Youtube, try this link: https://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjQ5MjQwMjM0MA==.html)

Chinese Student Survey about the US Presidential Election

It should come as no surprise that Donald Trump is coming up in our interviews with international students, even with us being careful to not put students on the spot about their personal political views. We decided to broadly poll our WeChat followers in China about Donald Trump becoming the U.S. president. We had over 300 students vote anonymously.

Here’s what we asked:

1. From your perspective as a soon-to-be international student, how do you think having Donald Trump as the U.S. president will impact you?

A. I think that it won’t have much impact on me: 21.4%
B. I am concerned that it will have a negative impact on me: 51.8%
C. I think it will have a positive impact on me: 26.8%

2. How do you think having Donald Trump as the U.S. president will influence the decisions of future international students?

A. I do not think that it will have much impact. Students will make their decisions based on other factors: 51.3%
B. I think it will have a negative impact upon the desire of international students to study in the U.S.: 40.9%
C. I think it will have positive impact upon the desire of students to study in the U.S.: 7.7%

One interesting question: Why would 26.8% think that a Trump presidency would have a beneficial impact upon them while only 7.7% think that it would have a positive impact upon the desire of future students from China to study in the U.S.?

If you would like to see the original survey in Chinese, just let us know (mailto:contact@initialview.com) and we will email it to you.
