InitialView at Peking University

On Saturday we had the pleasure of being invited to guest lecture at Prof. Steven Hansen’s class on innovation at the Guanghua School of Management. We had a great time taking questions from the class about our business model and how we got things off the ground, but even more we enjoyed the insights of top MBA students on our business and the Chinese market.

Many thanks to Prof. Steven Hansen and his class for their input!

Big News at InitialView, Part 3

Right before Chinese New Year a reporter from The Next Web asked us for an update on the year. We had been so in the weeds that we almost didn't realize the progress we had made.

Here are some things to note:

(1) We are now accepted by 38 out of the top 50 U.S. national universities and 39 out of the top 50 national liberal arts schools, each as rated by the U.S. News and World Report, as well as by many more top regional schools.

(2) This year our interviews have been a part of thousands of U.S. college applications from China-based applicants.

(3) While based on preliminary numbers, students which had our interviews as part of their early admission application had a more than 50% higher acceptance rate compared to those who didn’t. We had always thought that our unscripted interviews could be one of the most powerful tools for admission officers, and we are thrilled that now the initial data is so clearly demonstrating our value.

Here’s a final quote:

The startup may have a nice cycle ahead for itself as new school partnerships attract more students, which will in turn catch the attention of more schools. The growing trend of Chinese students making their way overseas to study doesn’t appear to be letting up anytime soon, so InitialView is well on it way to grabbing an early lead in its industry.

Big News at InitialView, Part 2

Today we are pleased to announce that David Wivell is joining the InitialView team as our Head of Secondary School Relations. Previously, David was the Director of International Admission at Northfield Mount Hermon School, one of the top boarding/day schools in New England. Northfield Mount Hermon is one the largest and most prestigious boarding schools in the U.S., and David was responsible for both one-on-one aspects of admission like interviews and information sessions (often conducted in Mandarin) as well as setting up a system to recruit, diversify and manage incoming international students. Most notably, he became an expert at ferreting out falsified application materials.

David will lead InitialView’s expansion of its unique service to boarding schools. The technology and pricing will be the same as InitialView's interviews for college admission. The unscripted video interviews will be free for schools, while families will pay a set fee of RMB 600 (approximately $95 USD). As part of the fee, InitialView will forward the interview to as many schools as requested by the family. For an additional charge of RMB 600, InitialView will also proctor a writing sample.

In our press release, David states: “While some secondary school solutions look similar, InitialView is the only one that has been proven at the college level. Good boarding schools are run very much like small colleges, and I know distinguished secondary schools will appreciate that InitialView is used by prestigious higher education institutions.”

“As I know from my personal experience, cost is a significant factor in deciding where to apply, and InitialView’s technology and scale allows us to charge a fraction of what competitors charge. We believe that secondary schools will welcome us as an alternative to much more expensive options.”

Prior to joining InitialView, David was a journalist for the Associated Press (AP) in Beijing, where he in recent years personally covered some of the biggest news stories of China.

David was among the first wave of young American students to study in China after it reopened to the outside world in the late 1970’s. He is fluent in Mandarin and has lived in China for about 16 years, and both he and his children have been educated by the Chinese school system.

We are thrilled to have David join our team. As always, we are eager to connect with you. We are reachable at any time at contact@initialview.com or at the phone numbers below. You may read the complete press release here.

Big News at InitialView, Part 1

Today we are pleased to announce the addition of proctored writing samples to complement our proprietary interview platform. We’ve been testing writing samples in the recent months and have been receiving great feedback, and now we are rolling them out as an option for all interviews.

If any of our supporting organizations would like to have their applicants sit for a proctored writing sample, all they have to do is indicate such in their recommendation to applicants. Each applicant is monitored for the complete duration of the test, and the admission officers (and any ESL colleagues) receive a copy of the essay question(s) and the students’ handwritten response.

The cost for students of the writing sample portion is RMB600 (about USD95), and we will send the writing sample to as many schools as requested by the student (just like our interviews).  As always, there is no charge for the school.

Proctored writing samples are a key element in our commitment to meeting the various needs of our supporting organizations. Should you have any questions about this new service, please don’t hesitate to email us at contact@initialview.com or call us at the phone numbers below.
