Introducing Dr. Jerome A. "Jerry" Lucido

Today we are thrilled to announce that Dr. Jerome A. Lucido, the Executive Director of the Center for Enrollment Research, Policy, and Practice (CERPP) at the University of Southern California, has joined InitialView as a senior advisor (Dr. Lucido is joining in his personal capacity and does not represent CERPP or USC in his role with InitialView). As the director of CERPP, Dr. Lucido is recognized as a leading authority on U.S. higher education admission policy and practice, having previously served as the Vice Provost for Enrollment Policy and Management at USC and the head of undergraduate admission at UNC Chapel Hill.

From the beginning of our interactions, Dr. Lucido has been invaluable in helping us understand the multiple ways our interviews could be of assistance to admission officers. He also shares our passion for providing transparency and ensuring the integrity of the U.S. admission process. Not only does he believe that our interviews can go a long way towards solving many of the issues surrounding applicants from China, Dr. Lucido has also demonstrated for us how our interview platform can assist with the evaluation of non-cognitive skills of applicants.

We at InitialView welcome Dr. Lucido to the team, and we are excited about the many ways that InitialView will benefit from his experience and expertise.

IV and ESL Programs

We are always finding out new ways that schools can take advantage of our platform in China. In addition to the obvious advantages—providing an authentic view of an applicant, addressing fraud concerns and confirming English ability—we’ve been pleased to find that some schools with ESL programs see our interviews as an effective (and painless) way to measure students’ ability even before they arrive on campus.

Given that each of these competitive ESL programs has more applicants than spots, these programs are interested in getting the best candidates in the most effective way possible. They want to admit students who are going to succeed and eventually take courses with traditional students (after all, a student who can demonstrate enthusiasm for overseas studies in an interview is more likely to endure the challenges of learning a new language in a foreign country). Furthermore, with our interviews, these ESL programs are able to prepare in advance for classes and instructors, thereby saving precious time and resources.

In other words, we continue to benefit from the input of our clients, and we are excited to see all of the ways that we can make their lives easier.

Our Redesigned Website! (and, the Best Promo Video You're Going to See All Week)

With great fanfare, we are pleased to unveil our updated website. In order to take advantages of recent advances in web technology as well as to further improve the experience for our users, we decided a few months ago to undertake a complete overhaul of our website. While we are extremely proud of what our team of web designers, software engineers and network specialists has been able to accomplish, we are always open to suggestions as to how to improve our site. Please let us know what you think--just email us at contact@initialview.com.

Working with Georgia Tech

We had the pleasure of teaming up with Georgia Tech this admissions cycle to assist them with interviewing students from China. Perhaps due to Georgia Tech's engineering background, they are always looking for ways to use technology to solve problems. Georgia Tech has been instrumental in providing us with feedback on how to optimize our video platform for admissions, and we are extremely grateful to them for their support. One unexpected (but very encouraging) piece of feedback we received was from the professors. The admission office at Georgia Tech has been experimenting with ways to include professors in their admission process, and they told us that professors loved the ability to view a live, unscripted interview with candidates. Georgia Tech has been at the forefront of trying to evaluate crucial "non-cognitive"--or so-called "soft"--skills in their admission process, and we are glad that we are able to help them with their goal.
